Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal information the campaign to elect Matthew Miller to Nanaimo City Council collects through this website, why it is collected, and what happens to it afterward. Questions can be sent to [email protected].

Who is responsible

This website is published by the campaign to elect Matthew Miller in the October 17, 2026 general local election for the City of Nanaimo. The campaign's financial agent is responsible for the financial records required under the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act. All other personal information is handled by the campaign directly.

Information collected automatically

Site analytics. The campaign uses Umami, an analytics tool running on servers the campaign controls. It records page views, the page or search that referred you, approximate country, browser type, and screen size. It does not set cookies, does not store IP addresses, and does not follow visitors to other websites. The results are aggregate counts and are not used to identify individual visitors.

Network and security. This site is delivered through Cloudflare, which sits in front of the campaign's server to filter malicious traffic and speed up page loads. In doing that, Cloudflare processes visitor IP addresses and request details under its own privacy policy. The campaign does not use that data to identify visitors.

This site does not use advertising trackers, social media pixels, or third party cookies.

Information you provide

Email and phone contact. If you write to the campaign, the campaign keeps your message and contact details so it can reply and follow up.

Volunteering and yard signs. Sign up to volunteer or request a yard sign and the campaign collects your name, contact information, and address. Addresses are used to schedule sign installation and removal and to organize canvassing. This information is shared only with campaign volunteers who need it to do that work.

Contributions. Contributing requires your full name, residential address, and contact information, along with confirmation that you are eligible to contribute. See the section below.

Forms. Nothing you type into the contribution form on the Support page is transmitted while you fill it in. The form runs in your browser and produces payment instructions for you to follow. Your details reach the campaign when you send the contribution.

Campaign contributions and public disclosure

Provincial law governs how contributions are recorded and reported. Four points matter to anyone considering one.

• Contributions may only be accepted from individuals who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and residents of British Columbia. Contributions from corporations, unions, and other organizations are prohibited.
• The financial agent must record the full name and residential address of every contributor, along with the amount and date.
• Contributions totalling $100 or more in relation to this election are published by Elections BC in its Financial Reports and Political Contributions System, showing the contributor's name and the amount contributed. Elections BC obscures residential addresses before publishing.
• Campaign contributions to local election candidates are not eligible for tax receipts.

Providing this information is a legal condition of contributing. The campaign cannot accept a contribution without it.

How the information is used

Personal information collected through this site is used to reply to messages, coordinate volunteers and yard signs, record and report contributions as required by law, and send campaign updates to people who asked for them. It is not used for any other purpose.

What the campaign does not do

• The campaign does not sell, rent, or trade personal information.
• The campaign does not share contact lists with other candidates, campaigns, political parties, or outside organizations.
• The campaign does not add people to email lists because they contributed, volunteered, or sent a message. Email updates go only to people who asked for them.
• The campaign does not use information collected here for any commercial purpose.

Who else handles your information

A small number of service providers handle information on the campaign's behalf: the email provider that carries campaign messages, Cloudflare as described above, and the financial institution that processes contributions. Elections BC receives contribution records because the law requires it. No one else receives personal information collected through this site.

How long information is kept

Financial records are kept for as long as the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act requires and are then destroyed. Volunteer, yard sign, and general contact information is destroyed after the campaign closes its books, unless you have asked to stay on a list.

Access, correction, and withdrawal of consent

Write to [email protected] to see what the campaign holds about you, correct it, or ask that it be deleted. The campaign will respond within a reasonable time. Contribution records required by law cannot be deleted on request.

Every campaign email includes an unsubscribe link. You can also unsubscribe by replying to any message.

Security

Personal information is stored on servers the campaign controls, with access limited to the candidate, the campaign manager, and the financial agent. Connections to this site are encrypted. No system is perfect, and the campaign will notify anyone affected if a breach creates a real risk of significant harm.

Complaints

If you are not satisfied with how the campaign has handled your personal information, you can contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.
